Basic rules of Kitten Training

Toilet Training

When a kitten arrives in a new home, it is important to have more than one litter tray and to show it to the kitten, as it is liable to use the same spot. Generally, a well brought up kitten knows the use of litter tray. On the very first day take the kitten to tray immediately after a meal and stir the litter to attract the attention of kitten. Initially, the litter tray should be within the reach of kitten and then gradually it can be shifted a little towards the door daily. Before moving it outside the house, keep the tray near the door at least for two or three days to make it feel safe.

For an emergency, one tray should be kept inside the house. These trays should be cleaned properly and regularly as cats will not use a dirty tray and may use the other clean place in the house. If somehow the cat develops this bad habit, it is difficult to correct this habit. Use of physical punishment or nose rubbing needs to be followed. In toms, the reason for this behavior is to mark the territory. So, it is important to clean the spot and remove every trace of their smell.

Vinegar can be used to clean the floor, but for carpets either foam or dry shampoo should be used. Inbreeding seasons spraying is confined to tom or queen but occasionally it can be seen in neutered cats because of any kind of excitement. If a trained cat dirties the house, it is important to find out the real reason. The possible reason may be that the cat might have an upset stomach or bladder problem and the litter tray may be out of reach. If once they defecate outside the tray, they will use the same pot, so it is imperative to mask the smell.

First Step in Training

Kittens are very active and they learn by trial and error. They should not be punished physically as they may become wary. A gentle tap on the back of a sharp ‘ugh’ may work in some cases. Do not try to train them like dogs, as they will become more doubtful and unloving. Training also depends on the kind of lifestyle the cat is following in the house or flat. If the cat has to live in flat or confined to a house, it should not be allowed to go out of the house otherwise they may escape from the house. While a kitten/ cat which is allowed to come in and go out of the house should be supervised to avoid running away or injury.

In some cases where the cat can go out of the house, cat flaps are used. These are fixed on the outside door and the cat can use these to move in and out of the house. Different types of cat flaps are available in the market which can be put safely on the lower portion of the door. Its placement should be adjusted to about 6 inches from the base so that the cat can use it easily. Flaps can open one way or both ways and maybe wooden, plastic or rubber and plastic with magnetic closure. A kitten or cat will learn to use a flap after proper instructions and training. Some large houses even have a separate home for the pet cats.

Basic House Rules

A kitten/ cat should learn house rules from the very first day. They should be allowed to follow the same rules otherwise it will never learn and will get confused. These rules should be simple. When a cat does something wrong, it should get a soft slap on the back with a command ’No’ and when it does something good and sits quietly then it should be petted and praised.

Commands should be simple like ’No’, ’Come and Stay’ etc. ‘No’ should be used for any wrong and undesirable activity. ’Come’ should be used along with pet’s name to call it in the room or near you, ’stay’ is used to make the cat stay at the same location where it is and should not follow you. Sometimes the sound like ’Psstt’ can be used. It is the same noise made by an angry cat. This sound will be helpful to stop the hyperactive cat when it is doing some uncontrollable activity.

Calling Your Cat

The cat should learn this at an early stage so that it responds whenever you call it from outdoors or from another room. Even if you have to keep it outdoors or in another room, the cat should receive a pleasurable moment either by food or by treats. It should not be a boring event for your cat, otherwise, it will not respond on your next call.

Begging Food

Cats should never be fed from the table. During training, tit-bits are given to kittens but it should not be fed from your meal, as the cat may become a nuisance. To prevent this habit, the cat should be shifted to another room after giving its food. But sometimes even after proper training, the habit of begging and stealing remains there. For correction of this punishment should be given and some shock tricks can be used. For example, someone can just splash water over a cat or make some noise, provided it is on that exact moment and is from a hidden and unknown source.

Climbing Habit

The cat has the habit of climbing over furniture and cupboards and may cause problems for itself and the owner. This can be avoided by using lightweight cartons and containers, which will drop down even with the slightest touch. Other than this cat repellant sprays are also available in the market, they can be used effectively as well. But the most precautionary method will be to keep the valuable things out of reach of your cat.

Scratching

Cats can damage furniture or carpets by scratching and the scent from their glands in the paws remain there. They will do it repeatedly if the smell is not masked from there. The smell can be removed by using vinegar or polish.

Hunting Is instinct

Cats have basic instinct to chase and kill the birds. This can only be prevented by not keeping food in an open area or in a garden where birds can reach and cats can attack them. Another method is to put the collar with a bell, which may warn the bird about a cat’s presence. It should be removed when the cat is inside the house, otherwise, continuous noise can also be a problem.
